Since the the era of major popularity for long thread carpeting was during the seventies, retro shag rugs that are used today automatically have a vintage feel. Even though these floor coverings were thought to be very old fashioned during the eighties once the fashions of interior design started to transition into different styles, themes, and forms, the shag rug became popular again.

Retro itself is a major fashion trend and luckily you do not have to buy a genuine pink or purple rug from the seventies to create the look. These rugs are being made again today. What has not returned with the same popularity is wall to wall shag carpeting. That is simply too much work to keep clean and hygienic.

Perhaps sometime in the future complete shag carpeting will return (potentially when there are new cleaning tools), but for the time being, shag rugs are the best option for people who want to change the look and feel of an area in their home to that of the sixties or seventies.

These rugs still pack a punch, because although they, along with retro styling in general, are featured in many modern interior design magazines they are still not found in every home. This means that having a shag rug or other items in the fun retro styles of the past makes your home unique since a large proportion of guests and visitors to your home most likely will not have a shag rug in their own living areas.

Not only do these shag rugs act as an amazing cool theme in your home and wow anyone visiting, they also are just nice floor coverings in general because of the natural warm and soft attributes of the shag based material, especially if you choose one with soft pile and natural fibers. Overall, a retro shag rug can be the perfect combination of style and function for anyone’s home.

Cotton shaggy rugs are an old favorite just making comeback for accenting floors. Back from the 70’s, these rugs were popular with students, who used them in their dorm rooms, and with new home owners, who wanted the latest thing in their homes and apartments. These fun and colorful area rugs are very soft to walk on and the new styles and colors look great. They work well for covering bare hardwood floors or just making a bold statement over carpet.

Cotton rugs are great idea for smaller kids rooms as well as dorm rooms. Since they are cotton, they can be dyed into many different funky patterns and colors while the cotton material is also easy to clean. Nearly any carpet cleaner will clean the rug, although spot cleaning is best. Since the rug is made of strips of fabric, when vacuuming the rug it is best to vacuum it at an angle, and avoid pulling the fibers straight up. This will help prevent any loose fabric from being pulled from the rug.

These shaggy rugs come in many different sizes and can fit into any room. If you are looking for a large shag rug to cover an expansive room cotton is a great option as it is less expensive than other fibers. A shaggy rug with a solid color or subtle striped pattern will particularly complement a larger space. These area rugs also come in smaller sizes for bedrooms and children’s rooms. With shapes such as hearts and stars, there is a rug for any age.

A cotton shaggy rug is a fairly easy to find at large box retailers, department stores, and specialty flooring outlets. Many online stores and sites also carry these rugs.

Cotton shag rugs are great option to add a burst of color to a room, and they add texture and impact to help accent the other pieces in the room. They work well for busy parents and dorm room residents both because of their easy cleanup and fun styles.
